Choosing the Right Type of Generator for your Homes

Posted on November 14th, 2009

During the old days when electricity doesn’t matter at all, people were contented using woods in stove, households weren’t affected at all. Hence the word “power outage” didn’t even exist. But today, with the invention of microwave ovens, televisions, computers, and refrigerators and many other electronic appliances, power outage is sure a big deal. We depend too much on electricity and technology. If the power goes out even for a short time, it is mayhem around the house. But how do we give solution to this knowing that power interruptions are inevitable especially during bad weather conditions, repairs of electric lines for better power supply and many other reasons. If you feel that power outage is getting into your nerves, it’s high time for you to buy the most recommended solution: standby generators.

The two kinds of generators

Portable generators and standby generators are the two basic types of generators available in the market. If you are considering your budget, portable generators are less expensive compared to the standby type. But they have several downsides such as they are inconvenient most of the time since you have to refuel the engine once they are exhausted. They only generate small amount of electricity thus they only allow certain small appliances to run. They are basically manually operated. Home standby generators on the other hand run automatically. Once the power comes out, the generator automatically turns on. They can also provide prolonged electricity supply and they can even light up the whole house. They can produce up to 20,000 KW of electricity. Though costly, they can never be considered a luxury. Their practical uses and the convenience they bring are sure worth the price. One disadvantage is you cannot remove them once installed. You will need a lot of money, time and manpower just to move or relocate them.

Before purchasing, be sure to know your specific need. They must be able to serve their purpose once you need them too. You must also check the manufacturer’s warranty and installation’s instructions. Be sure to use them safely at all times.
