How to Maintain your Standby Generators

Posted on November 18th, 2009

The value of electricity is usually taken for granted. We don’t realize its importance until it’s not available, and power cuts can occur in any moment.  Electricity is essential for all businesses and other important establishments such as hospitals and offices. So, whenever there is power interruptions, generators could prevent the loss. Generator is a device that changes mechanical energy into electrical energy.

Standby generator explained

Standard generators are used to offset the effects of power loss.  They are set up permanently as an emergency power source for the business. They can automatically detect once the power is cut and then automatically switches on the standby power supply. They are run either by natural gas, diesel, or LPG (liquefied profane gas). Once in use, they can supply electricity to chosen circuits for a long period of time. Though costly, they can supply electricity for the whole building of your business. But this cost is usually offset by the income that you would have earned in case you stop your business operation just because of blackouts which are normally inevitable. Used standard generators are therefore essential for your business.

Maintaining your generators

Before buying a generator, the size, fuel choices, motor speeds and cooling systems should be carefully assessed.  You should know the specific voltage needed for your company, and then you can pick the model that supplies enough wattage. There are different models with different specs available in the market. You can also check on the internet the available models and their corresponding prices.

Once the standby generator is purchased, it is a must that you know the ways on how to maintain your generator.  You should bear in mind that you have spent your hard earned dollars for them thus, damage prevention should be done.  Large types should power up each week to make sure that everything is properly functioning. Smaller generators on the other hand require manual intervention like oil and spark plug replacements at regular intervals.
